PuebloLindo FAQ 1. Q. What is PuebloLindo?

A. An on-line, virtual interactive community where students can enjoy real-time communication with
native speakers and other students of Spanish from around the world. PuebloLindo brings Spanish alive for students- it's like visiting a Spanish-speaking community that's as close as their own computers.

2. Q. Where is PuebloLindo?

A. In cyberspace! Technically, it’s on a computer in Syracuse, New York, that you connect to using an Internet connection and the Pueblo client program (see below). You can learn more about how to do this by going to the PuebloLindo website at: http://PuebloLindo.heinle.com.

3. Q. What can students do in PuebloLindo?

A.       Visit the Oficina de Turismo

Join their friends in the Plaza Mayor
Take a cab to the Avenida Central
Have a bite to eat at the Restaurante La Amistad
Use the Heinle & Heinle textbook activities in the Escuela de lenguas
Read a television programming guide in the Café Lindo
Practice chatting in Spanish with other speakers and learners of Spanish
4. Q. Do I need to download anything to access PuebloLindo?

A. Yes. To download the Pueblo client program, follow these instructions (you may want to print out these instructions first):

1. Type the following line into your browser's location box and hit Enter:

ftp://moo.syr.edu/pblo201.exe

2.  In the "save-as" window, indicate the directory where you want the installer program
(pblo201.exe) saved. We recommend that you save the installer program either to your
desktop, or that you create a new PuebloLindo directory in which to save it. Once you've
selected a directory to save the installer program, click Save.

3.Allow the installer program to download. On a computer with a direct connection to the
Internet, this should take roughly two minutes. On a modem, this can take 20-30 minutes,
depending on modem speed and net traffic.

4.Find the directory in which you saved the installer program file in. Close all programs that
you might have running and double-click on the icon named "pblo20l.exe"

5.Follow instructions as the program installs. The Pueblo client software will be installed onto your
hard drive in a new directory you can choose. You will then be able to open the Pueblo client
software from the Program Manager (Windows 3.1) or the Start Menu (Windows 95).

Note: Should you have difficulty downloading the client
from the ftp site in 1. above, you can download it from
the Chaco website: http://www.chaco.com

1.  Once you arrive at www.chaco.com click on the words, Get Pueblo 2.01

2.  On the next screen, click on the words, Download Pueblo 2.01 Now!

3.  On the next screen, fill in the form and then click on the button that says Click to Display Download Sites

4.  On the next screen, click on Download

5. Q. Once I have downloaded and executed the Pueblo client, what do I do to enter PuebloLindo?

A. 1. Open the Pueblo window and click on "Edit your personal list".

2. Click on the "Add" button, then fill in this information in the "World Information" window:

3. Then just click on the PuebloLindo name on the first Pueblo window.  When asked for your name, type in your character name if you have received your password, or invitado if you are logging on as a guest.  If prompted, type your password.  If you logged in as a guest, type in the guest name you want to use during that session.

6. Q. Where can I find help for PuebloLindo?

A. Once inside type "help" or "ayuda" or go to http://web.syr.edu/~lmturbee/helpfile.htm

7. Q. Will this run on a Mac?

A. No, not the multimedia elements.  Only text is available to Mac users who use telnet to connect to moo.syr.edu, port 8181.

8. Q. What if I can’t get connected once I have the Pueblo client running?

A.  Check to make sure you have filled out all the information correctly as in 5 above. Also, if you’re trying to connect from a school and are having difficulties, see 9 below.

9. Q. What if I can connect from home but I can’t get it to connect from school?

A. If you are having trouble connecting to PuebloLindo after you’ve loaded the client onto a machine
at your school, talk with the network administrator at the school. Ask this person what the SOCKS proxy and port is. Then, with the Pueblo client open, go to Edit - Preferences - Proxies .... then click on "Use the following proxies".
Fill in the proxy and port in there, and you should be able to get around the firewall.

10. Q. Can I use the same name when connecting from school as the one I use when connecting from home?

A.  Yes. Just set up the Pueblo client at school with the same information you used to set up your home machine. Your online character resides at PuebloLindo, not in one of your computers.

11.  Why haven't I gotten my new character name and password yet?

 A.  The email address you entered in the form was most likely incorrect and we can't get back to you with that
information.  Please return to the PuebloLindo website and re-register.  Be sure you type in your correct email address (must have an @ sign).

12.  Why didn't I get one of the two names I selected?

A.  1) It's already in use by another character at PuebloLindo  2) it was innapropriate for this learning environment 3) it contained a word like:  profesor, profesora, senor, senora, maestro, maestra, etc.  There are so many teachers using PuebloLindo that use of these words would be very confusing.  Please use a single-word name if at all possible.  Two-word names are longer and therefore more difficult for citizens of PuebloLindo to type when they're chatting with you.

13.  Where can I find more help?

A.  At the PuebloLindo Help Files website.
